I didn’t start with a plan.
I started with a coffee.
Every morning, before the day demanded anything from me, I sat down quietly. Just me and a cup of coffee. No phone. No noise. Just a few minutes of being still and letting myself wake up slowly.
That was my 1%.
It sounds small. It is small. That’s exactly the point.
James Clear didn’t write Atomic Habits to tell you to transform your life overnight. He wrote it to show you something much more quiet and much more powerful — that a 1% improvement, repeated every day, compounds into something unrecognizable.
I came to this book during one of the hardest seasons of my life. I was starting over. Completely. And the idea of changing everything felt impossible. So I didn’t try to change everything.
I changed one morning.
Then one habit. Then one day.
And somewhere along the way — without a dramatic turning point, without a single moment where everything clicked — I looked up and realized the world had completely changed around me. Not because something outside of me shifted. But because I had.
Pinterest started as a small thing. Then this blog. Then a book. Then a website.
None of it felt like a big decision in the moment. It all felt like 1%.
“You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
What Clear understands — and what took me a long time to feel in my own life — is that you don’t need to be motivated. You don’t need to feel ready. You just need to build the smallest possible version of the thing you want, and then show up for it.
Every single day.
The coffee is still there every morning. So is everything that grew from it.
What is your 1%? Tell me in the comments. 🖤
